Eczema The terms eczema or dermatitis are used to describe certain kinds of inflamed skin conditions including allergic contact dermatitis, atopic dermatitis or atopic eczema, and nummular dermatitis. Eczema can be red, blistering, oozing, scaly, brownish, or thickened skin and usually itches. While eczema cannot be cured, most cases can be controlled by making lifestyle modifications to prevent flare-ups and using medication as prescribed to prevent inflammation and itching. In some cases, a skin biopsy, or other testing, may be performed to determine the specific causes. Certain types of severe eczema may require treatment with phototherapy. At DCW, we recommend that treatment be started at the onset of signs and symptoms. When therapy begins early, it often reduces severity and duration of flareups.
