Botulinum Toxin (BOTOX®)
Botulinum Toxin A is a purified protein that binds to nerve endings, preventing
the release of the chemical transmitters that activate muscles. When injected
into specific areas of the upper face, it relaxes the small muscles that
cause frown lines, crow's feet, horizontal forehead creases, and other
facial wrinkles. BOTOX treatment decreases local muscle activity, thereby
preventing the appearance of "dynamic" wrinkles that are caused by repeated
facial expressions. The effect generally lasts from three to five months.
In some cases, after multiple treatments, results can last longer and
treatments may be done less frequently.
The procedure is performed in our office and takes only minutes. The skin
may be treated with a topical anesthetic if requested, but this is rarely
necessary. A thin, fine-gauge needle is then used to inject the botulinum
toxin into the skin and muscle of a specific part of the face. Side effects
are rare and transient, although the treatment can sometimes cause a brief
headache and bruising can occur at the injection site. Applying ice packs
over the treated site before and after the injections can reduce the discomfort
and bruising. You can go back to work and resume light activities right
after treatment. For optimum results, avoidance of vigorous exercise is
recommended for four hours after treatment. BOTOX has been used worldwide
for many years for both medical indications and cosmetic purposes. Millions
of people have been treated both safely and efficaciously.
Botulinum toxin has also been approved by the FDA for the treatment of hyperhydrosis (excessive sweating) in the under arm area. New uses for botulinum toxin continue to be investigated for their safety and effectiveness.
